As a woman, it is important to keep yourself knowledgeable about all things around your house. From completing simple tasks like changing batteries in a smoke detector, to fixing a running toilet, women should know how to run all aspects of a home. This knowledge will help when a spouse is too busy to perform simple tasks. These everyday repairs are simple enough to manage even after a long day at work. Set a good example and show your children that you can take control when necessary and be a problem solver. Home repair will not be intimidating if you follow these simple instructions.

Fix a running toilet

A running toilet can be a signal of many problems, but the most common is the fill valve. To begin this home repair, go to your local hardware store and purchase a new valve. Follow these simple instructions for replacement, but make sure you also read the instructions given on your product package.

Turn off the water supply and empty the toilet bowl by flushing the toilet. Disconnect the water supply line, loosen the nut that attaches the fill valve, and remove the old valve. Clean the area. Ensure that the top of the new valve will sit at least an inch above the top of the overflow tube. Finally, tighten the nut and replace the water supply line.

Re-caulking a tub

Old caulking in your bathroom can lead to leaks and water damage. Replacing the caulk is simple, and this easy home repair can save you money in the future. This repair will also make your bathroom look newer if paired with grout cleaning.

Grab a bottle opener and use the pointed tip to scrape out the old caulking around the tub. Clean the area with a damp cloth and let it dry. Fill the tub with water and caulk while it is full. Apply the caulking around the tub. Use a wet finger to make sure the area is completely sealed. Let the caulking dry and empty the tub.

Clean dryer lint vent

Dryer lint can lead to house fires. To ensure yours is not next, you should clean out the lint trap. This home repair should be done every year. Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. Unscrew the lint vent tubing. Use a vacuum to clear the lint from the tube, and be thorough. Replace the tubing and tighten the screws. Finally, use a vacuum to clean lint from the outside vent.
