Stew is a great dinner choice because you can mix and match ingredients and throw in what you have on hand rather than having to head to the grocery store for items you are out of. Chicken is a healthy and delicious choice for stew, and its flavor pairs well with many other foods. Cooking chicken can be done is many ways, and you can even use leftovers for your pot of stew.

The crock pot is one easy way to throw together a pot of chicken stew without much effort or cooking requirements. Simply put all the ingredients into the crock pot and turn it to low. Let it cook all day, which ensures that the chicken is cooked throughout. This method also allows the flavors in your chicken stew to meld, making it taste richer. Cut the chicken into cubes and combine with chunks of vegetables. Cover with water, and season with any herbs and spices you like.

For a quicker cooking chicken stew, put your ingredients of choice into a large stock pot, cover with water, season, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer the stew for about one hour, or until the chicken is cooked through and the other ingredients are soft and easy to chew. Watch the pot carefully to make sure it doesn’t boil over. Stir the stew occasionally to ensure that the ingredients on the bottom don’t burn or stick to the pot.

Chicken stew can be made with a huge range of ingredients. This makes it easy to incorporate items that are in season or that you and your family especially enjoy. Common choices include carrots, celery, potatoes, zucchini, corn, green beans, and mushrooms. Add them all or just a few. But you don’t have to stop there. Sweet potatoes, acorn squash, onions, leeks, and parsnips are other good choices.

You could just buy a packet of stew seasoning at the grocery store and mix it into your chicken stew as it cooks. But, mixing and matching your own favorite seasonings lets you vary the flavor of your stew. Many herbs and spices work well with chicken, and you can just toss in a little of whatever you have. Chopped garlic, thyme, rosemary, and chives are good choices. Onion powder, bay leaves, allspice, Italian seasonings, and coriander are other unique choices. Of course, you can’t go wrong with salt and pepper, either.

Serve your pot of chicken stew with garlic bread, a tossed vegetable salad, or slices of crusty bread spread with butter. This rounds out the meal and fills your tummy.
