Whether it’s a holiday, a birthday, or a just-because gift, you may want to buy a button-up shirt for one, or all, of the important men in your life.

There are many styles that this type of shirt can come in, and here are the four most popular ones: A striped shirt is a nice addition to any man’s wardrobe. Contrasting colors will most likely work best for this type of shirt.

Striped shirts are available in vertical and horizontal stripes. If the man for whom the shirt is intended is a little on the short side, vertical stripes will look best on him. The button-up will make him appear slightly taller and slimmer.

A solid colored shirt can be used as a go-to shirt for any occasion. They come in every color of the rainbow, but white is the most versatile. If the man for whom the shirt is intended would like to wear a tie with this shirt a solid white colored shirt will give the tie an opportunity to stand out. A solid white shirt will also match well with any suit color.

A gingham patterned shirt is characterized by its checkered pattern and cotton fabric. As with striped button-up shirts, contrasting colors are best for gingham shirts. What’s great about gingham is that it can be worn in formal settings with a suit and tie, and as casual attire, such as a pair of jeans and a sports jacket. Gingham’s adaptability makes it another wonderful extension to a man’s attire.

Plaid is similar to gingham, but the checkered pattern is usually bigger in size. Also, plaid usually incorporates multiple colors in its pattern, while gingham generally only has two. The pattern is often associated with golfers and Scottish kilts, but also works quite nicely on men’s button-up shirts.

The most traditional colors for casual dress are red and black. Meanwhile, navy, gray, and white are better for formal occasions. Of the four styles shown, striped and solid will work best for formal occasions, and gingham and plaid for casual wear.

However, all four are acceptable in both settings. So, next time you’re considering buying a nice shirt for one or many of the men in your life, consider these popular shirt styles. Be it for your husband, father, or brother, you’ll make sure that you are making a quality investment in their wardrobe, and possibly make them very happy in the process.
