For young girls in the United States, a sweet 16 birthday party is something to dream about. With television shows flaunting fabulous parties and dress shops displaying ball gowns for the event, it’s no wonder every little girl wants a huge party. Here’s how to make the occasion memorable, and stay within your budget.

Before setting a date for the party, look around town for a great location to host the festivities. Since a sweet 16 is extra special, choose a location where your daughter loves to hang out with her friends. During the summer, consider a water park or amusement park. During cooler weather, look into renting a movie theater, game arcade, or indoor swimming pool.

Turn the sweet 16 birthday party into a true event by having formal invitations printed at a local print shop. Use a fancy scrolling font and colors to match the party decor. Mail the invitations a minimum of two weeks before the party and ask guests to RSVP so you can have the right amount of favors and snacks ready for the party.

Sure your daughter loves your cooking and can’t pass up your famous tres leches cake. But, make the festivities even more grown up by having a caterer bring food to the party venue. To save on costs, host an afternoon party and serve appetizers, cake, and punch. There’s no need to host a three course sit-down dinner.

Wow your teen by having a special performer attend the birthday party. Leave the magician and clowns for a younger sibling’s birthday. Instead consider a hypnotist, psychic, or a local band for the sweet 16 birthday party. Or, if your daughter is into dance, consider having her and her friend choreograph a special performance for her own party.

Young girls love to express their personality through clothes. Add a dress code to the invitation. It doesn’t need to be formal, but it should be appropriate for both boys and girls. For example, ask everyone to wear the party theme colors, such as red and white. Or, ask everyone to wear beach wear such as sundresses and Hawaiian shirts. If your teen is into a certain type of music or movie character, make the dress code follow that theme.

Even Hollywood party goers leave with a gift bag of some sort. Make your daughter and her friends feel like red carpet guests by offering a small party favor as they depart the sweet 16 birthday party. Include candy, a CD, or gift cards for online gaming. The bag doesn’t need to be large. It’s the thought that counts!
