Munchies are a must-have on movie night. These nine snacks are free of wheat, barley and rye, so they are allergen-friendly for a guest with a sensitivity to gluten or with celiac disease.
But remember, before serving up a platter or two of gluten-free snacks, always read the ingredient list on any processed foods, such as dips or dressings. Enjoy!
1. Mixed nuts
A bowl of cashews, almonds and peanuts are perfect for snacking and chatting. Sweeten the treats by adding a handful of shredded coconut, dried cranberries or pure chocolate chips.
2. Fruit kebabs
Keep movie night healthy by serving up fresh fruit skewers. Use novelty party skewers and colorful fruits to keep it fun. Try whole strawberries , grapes, orange slices and pineapple chunks.
3. Cucumber sandwiches
Make bite-sized sandwiches from thinly sliced cucumber disks filled with gluten-free cream cheese. Season the cheese with fresh chopped garlic, herbs or veggies. Skip the cocktail bread to keep these snacks allergen-free.
4. Chips and salsa
Make homemade corn tortilla chips, or keep it simple and grab a bag at the store. Serve the chips with your favorite homemade salsa recipe. For variety, try a fruit-based salsa made with mangoes, pineapple and sweet chili peppers.
5. Buffalo wings
Unprocessed meats (think bone-in wings, not chicken nuggets) are naturally gluten-free. Bake the chicken wings without using a batter and serve them with a variety of dipping sauces. Be sure to include something spicy, sweet, and classic to appeal to all guests.
6. Mini tacos
This favorite appetizer should be made from scratch to ensure it’s allergen-free. Start with corn taco shells . Fill them with homemade seasoned beans, carne asada and queso.
7. Fruit and nut butter
Make a tray of fresh sliced apples and pears. In the middle of the display, offer a variety of softened nut butters for dipping. Include cashew butter, almond butter and sunflower seed butter for a sweet and salty snack.
8. Rice cakes
Pick up a package of plain miniature rice cakes. Use the cakes as a base to build on. Try combining a dollop of soft cheese topped with a grape tomato. Or, tempt everyone’s sweet tooth by combining caramel and chocolate chips.
9. Shrimp cocktail
Dig your cutest glasses out of the back of the cupboard and put together individual fresh seafood cocktails, complete with jumbo shrimp. Keep the dipping sauces simple–buy gluten-free options from the supermarket .
