Decluttering the kitchen pantry in four easy steps

A messy kitchen is a sign of a good cook. However, if your pantry looks like the aftermath of a tornado, it’s time for some decluttering, organizing, and the best part: restocking! Here’s how to get your kitchen pantry in order before the rush of the holidays.

Step 1: Remove everything from the pantry. This includes all cans, packets, boxes, and even those old jars of tamales you’ve forgotten about in the far back corner. Look for an expiration date on each item as it’s removed. Toss the expired items and keep the rest for sorting. Wipe down the shelves with a food-safe cleaning solution.

Step 2: Repackage popular foods into jars. Pour bags of rice, dried beans, and bulk seasonings into clear jars. This makes it easy to see how much of the item you have on hand. Plus, you can keep the items close to the front of the pantry for routine use.

Step 3: Add vertical storage to the pantry. Use wire shelving inserts and can holders for decluttering and organizing. Use one can holder for beverages and another for canned foods. Layer short cans of adobo sauce and hot peppers on the pantry shelves. Then place wire shelves above the short cans to store additional pantry items.

Step 4: Install pantry door storage. Choose adhesive-mount paper towel holders, slender storage bins, and towel racks to mount inside the pantry doors. Use this space to tuck away hand towels, paper towels, and small containers of spices.
