Speed dating tips: 7 questions to start the conversation

Cut through the chitchat and get down to business. Speed dating gives you a chance to ask important questions in a relaxed setting. Say goodbye to discussing the weather or your pretty sweater. Here’s how to get some real answers–and information–about who you might be interested on going on a date with.

1. Where are you from?

This tells you if the person grew up locally, or longs to go back to his home area. It also opens the discussion of whether or not he plans to stay in the area or move on; which is important if you’re have roots in the area with a job, children, or home.

2. What do you do for work?

Learn how he spends his days. Is he happy at work? Or, is he looking to change careers? How a man spends eight or so hours a day tells you a lot about this personality.

3. Do you have children?

You might as well get this biggie out of the way at the start. Use this information to then let him know if you’re a mother or not, and what your future family plans look like. This may scare him off, but if your thoughts on children don’t jive, neither will a relationship.

4. Have you ever been married?

Let’s face it; you’re not 18 any more. Some potential mates have already said “I do”, and that’s OK. But, it’s nice to know, going into a possible relationship, if there will be an ex-wife or step-children in the mix.

5. What are your hobbies?

This is a good way to find out how he spends his time outside of work. Is he an outdoors-man that can’t get enough hiking, fishing, or skiing? Or, is he a happy stay-at-home with movies and video games kind of guy?

6. Where did you go to school?

You could discuss high school or college endeavors. Who knows; you might be long lost classmates or have a mutual friend from the past. This is also a great way to learn when he graduated, and find out his age without asking.

7. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Think about his answer and see if it blends with your future hopes and aspirations. He might be thinking of going back to school, while you’re anxious to buy a home and fill it with children.

Be confident and ask open-ended questions that address topics that are important to you when speed dating. Like everyone else, you’re shopping for a possible date. It’s no secret. So, ask away!
