Apple stores around the world started selling the new iPhone 6 models to consumers on Friday, and the smartphone’s sales have already set records for the tech giant.

The iPhone 6 and the oversized 6 Plus went on sale in ten countries, such as the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, and Japan. Eager Apple fans all over the world waited in lines for hours to get their hands on the world’s newest and most buzzed-about smartphone.

According to Bloomberg News, the Apple store on Fifth Avenue in New York drew such a large crowd during the product debut that police officers had to place barricades up to contain the frenzy. The line to get into the Apple store stretched over 10 blocks through Manhattan.

The scenes were similar at Apple stores all over the world.

US News interviewed Jason Burrell, who was the first customer in Washington DC to own the new iPhone 6, and discovered that he had waited in line for 24 hours. In Sydney, Australia, an estimated 1,300 people waited in line outside of the Apple store, according to The Wall Street Journal. And in London, some 1,000 people waited overnight on Regent Street in the rain just to get their hands on the Apple’s new phone.

The sales of the iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus have already been record-breaking for Apple, with more than 4 million phones sold within 24 hours of becoming available for pre-order on September 12. That’s twice as many pre-orders than the iPhone 5 generated.

In many stores around the world, the iPhone 6 models have already sold out due to today’s rush of customers, and now carriers are questioning whether Apple has enough inventory to meet the extraordinarily high demand.
