McDonald’s has run out of French fries in Venezuela

Customers at the more than 100 McDonald’s restaurants in Venezuela have been deprived of the fast food franchise’s most beloved menu items—French fries. Instead, Venezuelan McDonald’s are serving up sides traditional to the country, such as deep-fried yuca and arepa flatbreads. The franchise claims that West Coast dock workers are to blame for the shortage of American-style fries, as a contract dispute has halted the shipment of frozen fries to Venezuela. The same dispute also caused a fry shortage in Japan last month. Venezuela’s neighboring countries, however, have not been affected by the labor dispute. McDonald’s released a statement promising to resolve the issue, adding, “We will continue to give our clients the McDonald’s experience, offering 100 percent Venezuelan options.” Most people do not consider fried yuca to be part of the “McDonald’s experience,” which has the franchise’s Venezuelan customers grumbling about yet another shortage of one of their favorite foods. Many are quietly pointing fingers at the country’s socialist administration. Due to a thriving black market for currency, customers could snag a Happy Meal for next to nothing at 90 cents. At the official exchange rate, however, a Happy Meal costs a whopping $27, making it the most expensive Happy Meal in the world.
