Anthem Blue Cross, AltaMed to Partner Offering Latinos Education and Health Coverage in Light of the Affordable Care Act

Anthem Blue Cross and AltaMed Health Services announced today an exclusive commercial health plan partnership aimed at providing Southern California’s Latino community valuable information about the upcoming changes expected with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The partnership includes the launch of a health plan that will be available on the state’s new health insurance exchange, Covered California.

While more Californians will have access to health care coverage options created under the ACA, residents still have many questions about how the changes will impact them. For the Latino community, the gaps in knowledge are equally as prevalent. A recent nationwide study found that nearly 52 percent of Latinos were not informed about the ACA however, 89 percent of those surveyed indicated they want to learn more about the new law. And, for the state’s growing Latino community, the upcoming changes require a unique approach as nearly 59 percent of uninsured Latinos will be eligible for coverage and selecting a health plan for what may be, the very first time.

AltaMed’s 40-year history of delivering quality care to the communities of Los Angeles and Orange Counties offers a unique opportunity to provide Latinos with up-to-date information about the anticipated changes and the decisions consumers will need to make later this year. Under this new partnership Anthem and AltaMed will host informational in-language sessions throughout local communities to help raise awareness and promote health and wellness.

Through this partnership Anthem and AltaMed have also developed an HMO Plan that will provide members with exclusive access to the AltaMed network in Los Angeles and Orange County. Members will have access to AltaMed’s expansive range of health services, network of physicians and primary care clinics located throughout both counties. This new HMO will be available for purchase on the state’s new health insurance exchange – Covered California – later this fall.

“The Affordable Care Act stands to impact Latinos more than any other legislation in decades,” says AltaMed’s President and CEO Cástulo de la Rocha. “As we see so many of our patients on the verge of receiving the health care coverage they very much deserve, we are thrilled to have a partner in Anthem who we know will offer exceptional plans for our patients. We look forward to the exceptional benefits we know our communities will see.”

“We are very excited to partner with AltaMed to help raise awareness about the upcoming changes in health benefits options in the state,” said Aldo De LaTorre, vice president provider engagement and contracting for Anthem. “We know AltaMed brings a long-standing heritage and understanding to meet the health care needs of Latino families through their fully integrated system and primary care clinics known for helping to improve health outcomes, reduce health care disparities and encourage prevention and healthy living, we look forward to working together to help educate our local communities and offer them an option that meets their unique health care needs.”
