Effort to Fight Nitrate Pollution in Romania Awarded a White Pencil
at New Global Awards Show

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AQUA Carpatica, the world’s only nitrate-free naturally sparkling

a White Pencil award in the Communications & Interaction category at the
first-ever D&AD Impact communications awards show in New York City. The
top honor for AQUA Carpatica’s “Purity Test” campaign celebrates the
brand’s use of creativity as a force for real-world good.

Romania has a devastating nitrate pollution problem, with more than
2,000 towns and villages with poisoned water sources and, as in all
European countries, doesn’t require bottled-water producers to disclose
nitrate content on their labels. Yet Romanians were unaware of the
problem, with sometimes-disastrous health consequences, especially for
children.

The Purity Test campaign, developed by Cohn and Jansen J. Walter
Thompson, changed that. It provided a simple paper strip, available in
supermarkets, that people could use to test the quality of their home
drinking water. They could then share the results online to inform
others, ultimately creating a water safety map of the entire country.
Celebrities, athletes and politicians joined AQUA Carpatica’s campaign
to begin a national conversation about nitrates and to raise awareness
of their negative health effects.
