Deutsche Post DHL Employees Participate in Global Volunteer Day Now in Its Fifth Year

  • In 2014, more than 108,000 employees participated in 117 countries
  • Nearly 5,000 employees volunteered more than 14,500 hours on
projects that benefitted 5,329 people in the U.S.

PLANTATION, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Deutsche Post DHL Group, the world’s leading postal and logistics
company, is once again calling on employees to take part in its annual
Global Volunteer Day (GVD) initiative. This effort embraces all Deutsche
Post DHL Group divisions worldwide. The initiative attracted some
108,000 participants in 117 countries last year. In the United States,
nearly 5,000 employees last year devoted more than 14,500 hours of their
own time in projects that benefitted 5,329 people.

The timeframe for this year‘s Global Volunteer Day activities is Sept.
17-27, although many employees serve as volunteers all year round,
engaging in activities that support key causes — from the environment,
education and employability to assisting the disadvantaged and
supporting charitable organizations.

In the U.S., DHL employees this year are participating in a broad range
of activities. In Charlotte, N.C., DHL Express volunteers spent time
sorting food and organizing warehouse pallets at Loaves & Fishes, a
nonprofit that provides groceries to families in need. In Columbus,
Ohio, 185 Supply Chain North America Management Board members and
associates put their logistics skills to use providing 470
volunteer hours sorting and packing food at Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
Associates also volunteered by raising funds, which together with the
company’s matching donation, resulted in 97,983 meals going to those in
need throughout Central Ohio. And in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., volunteers
from all business units will be repainting doors and walls and
reorganizing storage areas at Children’s Home Society of Florida, which
provides counseling and other services to help families nurture their
children to full potential.

“As a globally operating company, we aim to take on responsibility
towards the environment and society throughout all our business
operations. This is an integral part of Deutsche Post DHL Group
corporate strategy, Strategy 2020,” says Christof Ehrhart, Executive
Vice President of Corporate Communications and Corporate Responsibility
at Deutsche Post DHL Group. “Many of our employees are active throughout
the whole year. But during the dedicated period of Global Volunteer Day,
we see an additional level of commitment from them. Socially engaged
employees are not only giving back to the communities where we conduct
business, but also bringing fresh ideas and perspectives back into the
company.”

DHL employees around the world join forces with business partners and
nonprofit organizations in a multitude of regional and local projects.
They include classroom renovations, cleaning and planting activities in
parks, special events in children’s care facilities and homes for the
elderly. For many years now, Deutsche Post DHL Group and SOS Children’s
Villages have cooperated closely to help improve educational opportunity
and employability for youths. And in Latin America, many DHL employees
have helped build emergency housing with TECHO, a nonprofit organization
that works to overcome poverty and foster the development of communities.

Global Volunteer Day began in 2008 in Asia, where Deutsche Post DHL
Group employees donated their time and energy to support local projects
within a specific time window. This regional initiative went global in
2011 when the Group held its first-ever worldwide volunteer day. The
framework for GVD stems from Deutsche Post DHL Group’s Corporate
Responsibility program, which aims to balance economic, social and
environmental interests and guide the company’s efforts to act
responsibly.
