Ebates Holiday Survey: Staying on Budget Is Top Concern for Shoppers This Holiday Season

More Than Half of Americans Reveal They Have ‘Emergency’ Gifts on
Hand; Men Are Skeptical About Receiving Gifts from their Spouse, While
Women Worry About What Their In-Laws Will Gift Them

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ebates,
a leader and pioneer in cash back shopping and subsidiary of the global
internet services company Rakuten, announced today the second wave of
results of its Holiday 2016 Survey. The national survey, which was
conducted online by Propeller Insights on behalf of Ebates in October
2016 and fielded among 1,035 adults and 500 teens, revealed that the
holidays bring not only excitement but also skepticism when it comes to
gift giving and holiday shopping.

Holiday Shopping Skepticisms

It turns out that almost all American shoppers (93 percent) admit that
there is one or more aspect of holiday shopping that they feel skeptical
about.

Women and men are both most skeptical about staying on budget (55
percent of women and 46 percent of men) and that the items they want
will be in stock (52 percent of women and 51 percent of men), but they
also worry that they won’t be able to find what they need (42 percent of
men and 44 percent of women) and that the deals are too good to be true
(34 percent of men and 32 percent of women).

“Staying on budget is a concern for many families during the holidays,
and finding the best deals can be time-consuming,” said Kevin H.
Johnson, CEO of Ebates. “Ebates is the one-stop shop to help families
stay on budget, no matter what you’re shopping for. With coupons and
cash back at your fingertips, we make it easy to price match and choose
the best option for your budget.”

In Case of Emergency, Open an E-Gift Card?

Americans are split on whether or not to keep emergency gifts on hand in
the event that someone gives them a gift and they don’t have one in
return. 52 percent said they don’t keep emergency gifts on hand, and 48
percent said they do.

What do they keep on hand? Women keep lotions and body spray (59
percent), and men keep gift cards or e-gift cards (58 percent). This is
followed by:

Top emergency gifts   Percent of men   Top emergency gifts   Percent of
that men keep on hand who said this that women keep on women who said
        hand

this

Wine or other alcohol   41 percent   Candles   54 percent
Cash   41 percent   Gift cards/e-gift cards   51 percent
Lotions or body spray   35 percent   Picture frames/home decor   30 percent
Cookies/baked goods   34 percent   Wine or other alcohol   29 percent

I Love You, but No Thanks…

When it comes to who men are most skeptical about receiving a gift from,
it seems that men don’t entirely trust their spouses’ taste, with one
quarter (25 percent) revealing that they are most worried about which
gift they’ll receive from their significant other. Women are more
trusting of their spouses but not of their in-laws: one in five (20
percent) women is skeptical about receiving gifts from their in-laws.

Men also revealed that gifts from their grandparents are those they’re
the least excited to receive (less than 1 percent), while women chose
their boss as the gift-giver they’re least excited to have a gift from
under the tree (less than 1 percent).
