dramatically lower their energy bills. Following his own advice, Hiles
employs each energy saving technique in every apartment and home he
builds. First, he recommends windows with a solar heat gain coefficient

consuming up to 100 times less energy than old windows from 1980.

Second, Hiles wholeheartedly endorses the latest ENERGY STAR rated
appliances. Each year, consumers and program partners buy 320 million

When temperatures peak and air conditioners work overtime, Marcus Hiles

barrier roof panels installed in the attic reflect the heat, reducing up
to 97 percent of heat transfer from the underside of the roof and
keeping the attic up to 30 degrees cooler. Lastly, Marcus
Hiles advocates for properties that have central air conditioners
with a seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of 16 or above. Although
the Department of Energy requires the newest air conditioners to have a
13 to 14 SEER rating – depending on the type of system – the higher the
number, the better.
