Texas Veterans Portal Wins Best of Texas Award

Project honored for Best IT Collaboration Among Organizations

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Texas.gov
is proud to announce that the Texas
Veterans Portal
has received a Best of Texas Award from the
Center for Digital Government for Best IT Collaboration Among
Organizations. The Texas Veterans Portal is an important resource that
connects veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors to the
benefits they have earned through their military service and the
resources they need to transition back into civilian life.

Originally launched in 2010, the Texas Veterans Portal had become
outdated and lacked many features that are imperative to a modern-day
website. The new Texas Veterans Portal, launched on Veterans Day,
November 11, 2016, showcases how numerous Texas agencies worked together
for more than ten months to improve the website and produce the best
possible resource for Texas veterans. This group, the Veterans Portal
Advisory Committee (VPAC), provided oversight and input into the project
and included participation from the following agencies:

  • Texas Veterans Commission
  • Texas Department of Information Resources
  • Texas Health & Human Services Commission
  • Texas Workforce Commission
  • TexVet (a Texas A&M Health Science Center initiative)
  • Texas Veterans Land Board

Also involved in the project were Texas NIC, the private entity that
manages the Texas.gov program, and the University of North Texas, along
with a multitude of actual veteran users.

The new and improved Texas
Veterans Portal
features mobile-friendly responsive design, a
patriotic, respectful look and feel, organized, easy-to-navigate
information architecture and the ability to search, plain language
content in English and Spanish, “immediate needs” for veterans in
crisis, and much more.

Every year, the Center for Digital Government’s Best of Texas Awards
program salutes IT professionals and projects in Texas state and local
government organizations. The Texas Veterans Portal joins the ranks of
top IT projects that have received this prestigious recognition.
