Top Winners Announced in 2013 TXU Energy Light Up the Red Carpet Student Film Contest

Two student filmmakers have won top honors in the fourth annual TXU Energy Light Up the Red Carpet Student Film Contest.

Taylor Martin, who attends Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, won the high school division grand prize for his film, “Day In, Day Out.” Robert Ochoa, a student at Baylor University, received the university division grand prize for his film, “The Giants in the Sky.” Each prize includes scholarship funds of $7,500, which is split evenly between the student filmmaker and his school’s audiovisual departments.

Taylor and Robert shared the spotlight Friday night with four other Texas student filmmakers. All six collected their prizes at the Dallas Film Society Honors after debuting their films during the Dallas International Film Festival.

The contest challenged students to develop films that answer the question: What does energy mean to you? More than 130 Texas students from cities such as Fort Worth, San Antonio and Laredo submitted written film concepts for a chance to walk the red carpet at the film festival and share roughly $35,000 in cash prizes and video equipment.

“It’s a privilege for us to give these students the opportunity to illustrate their talents and to get a close-up view of their creativity and concerns when it comes to energy efficiency and conservation,” said Donna Egen, sponsorship manager for TXU Energy. “They truly have earned this recognition.”

The other high school winners are:

  • First place: Malak Abdallahi of Fossil Ridge High School (Keller Independent School District) for “Positive Vibes
  • Community Choice: Rachel Cocke of Wakeland High School (Frisco Independent School District) for “The Electricity Between Us

In the university division, the other winners are:

  • First place: Samantha Gipson of the Art Institute of Dallas for “The Makeover
  • Community Choice: Jeremy Williams of North Lake College (Irving) for “Spirits

First-place winners from each category received $3,000, and Community Choice winners won $1,000 for receiving the most online votes. The six winners were among the 20 finalists who won video-editing software valued at approximately $300.

A panel of judges from the Dallas Film Society and TXU Energy evaluated films from the finalists and based their award decisions on the students’ forward-thinking and creative ideas, overall entertainment and production quality, and effectiveness in conveying the filmmakers’ concepts or messages. In addition, the 20 finalists worked with industry mentors as they developed their films.
