WellPoint Receives Award for Healthcare Education Efforts in the Hispanic Community

WellPoint, Inc., (NYSE: WLP) announced today that it has received the Corporate Hispanic Health Leadership Award from the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) for its work in educating the Hispanic community on the Affordable Care Act.

NHMA recognized WellPoint, for their proactive efforts in helping to enroll uninsured Hispanics in their communities. According to NHMA officials, as the fasting growing minority group, it’s imperative to build partnerships that will help address the growing health challenges faced by Hispanics across the country.

“Our Hispanic Health Initiative supports community needs and reduces health disparities,” said Dr. Sam Nussbaum, chief medical officer for WellPoint. “Our hands-on outreach program targets five states, including California, New York, Colorado, Georgia and Virginia. Additionally through our Amerigroup subsidiary we are serving a large number of Hispanics beyond our 14 Blue states.”

“Hispanics are interested in working with health care professionals who can appreciate their culture and understand their values and traditions,” NHMA president Dr. Elena Rios said. “That need extends to insurance providers too, and we’re recognizing WellPoint with this award for their leadership in addressing the needs of our community.”

“It is WellPoint’s goal to make sure that Hispanic American families in the communities we serve can control their own health care journey by taking advantage of their many new insurance options, including plans available through the new exchanges,” said Dr. Antonio Linares, regional vice president and medical director at WellPoint. “For this reason, we continue our commitment to educate and engage the Hispanic community on the benefits of the law and how to enroll.”
