Mexican comedian Roberto Gomez Bolanos, best known for his role as “Chespirito,” has died, Televisa announced Friday. The cause of death was not immediately announced, he was 85.

The legendary comedian died in Cancún, Mexico, after reports that his health condition began to deteriorate last April.

Bolaños became one of the most successful and longest running careers in Mexican television. The comedian stopped recording material in the 1980s, but his shows are still aired regularly today.

“There are writers who pour out words, concepts that sound really important but that basically say nothing,” he said. “I always tried to be as concise as possible, all to try and reach everyone, but especially the simple people, those who needed to be reached more than anyone else.”

On Friday, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto tweeted, “Mexico has lost an icon whose work has transcended generations and borders.”

Born in Mexico City, Bolaños acquired a long list of accomplishments throughout his extraordinary life. He obtained and engineering degree, but his real passion was always acting, composing, directing and playwright.

Gomez Bolaños is survived by his second wife, actress Florinda Meza, as well as six children from his first marriage and 12 grandchildren, reported AP.
