Celebrities, musicians and everyday chicas sport it all the time, art that’s just creative, and colorful right on their finger nails. It’s no surprise this trend has exploded the way it has in recent years thanks to social media platforms like Instagram, Vine, and Youtube. Which have given anyone a place to express, learn, communicate, and teach the craft. It was Instagram that gave Sigourney Nuñez the stage to take her nail art hobby, and transform it into a career. “Nails for me are an accessory that I could do and look cute doing it. For me nails is another fashion accessory and its a ways to express yourself artistically, and it’s just another pivotal point of beauty.” She said.

It’s easy to see how Sigourney has a true passion for nail art. She has even taken a room in her apartment, and has made it her own nail studio. She gave me tour of it and is nothing less than a girl’s dream. “I go home and still do nails, I paint my nails almost everyday. I think about it, and dream about it. It really fills me,” She added.

Sigourney is currently an assistant editor for Nails Magazine, a trade publication for professionals and is in the process of transitioning to becoming a web editor for the publication. Before that, she was blogging about nail art for fun. That fun soon lead her to a freelancing job with Salon Fanatic, which open the door to her current position.

In doing nails she has found medium to express her artistic self and.  She has become obsessed with it. But as luck would have it, she was offered a full time job before she had the chance to sign up for school. Eventually, Sigourney says, she’ll become a  nail technician, expanding her skill.

But for the East L.A. native, this career turn wasn’t exactly what she had planned out from the start. After graduating from school, she had all the intention of becoming the best newspaper reporter that she could be. After many internships, and even moving out of state, she was having a difficult time landing a full-time job. It was during that same time, that she took up nail art, and considered returning to school to become a nail technician.

Sigourney has a loyal following of more than 24-thousand followers on Instagram, she says, they let her know what they like or dislike about her work. This only motivates her to keep going. She says, “You work hard to get to a place, and then you have to work even harder, but Love what I do and wouldn’t have it any other way.”

This chica is an example that with a little imagination, determination and a lot of hard work, you can make things happen. She’s picked herself up and dust herself off, created a career that she’s passionate about. Sigourney attributes much of her success to her friends and family. She says, “It’s because of them I work, play, and dream big.”
