South Coast Plaza Unveils New Christmas Tree Only Two Days After the Fire

COSTA MESA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–South Coast Plaza, an international shopping and dining destination,
unveiled and illuminated its new 70-foot Christmas tree in Town Center
Park on Dec. 16, a mere two days after flames burned the park’s original
96-foot traditional white fir Christmas tree in the early morning of
Dec. 14. The fire caused by an electrical malfunction made news across
the nation earlier this week.

In a span of 48 hours, workers cut off the branches, repurposed the
fir’s trunk by painting it, and installed over 8,000 multi-colored LED
lights from the top to the ground in a maypole-inspired design. The
circular base is covered with poinsettias and rimmed with garland and
succulents. A 36-inch illuminated crystal star sits atop the new tree.

“A Christmas tree in Town Center Park has been a beloved part of South
Coast Plaza’s annual holiday season for 34 years,” said Debra Gunn
Downing, spokeswoman for South Coast Plaza. “We intend to keep this
family and community tradition for years to come.”

South Coast Plaza’s original outdoor Christmas tree arrived from Mt.
Shasta, Calif. on Oct. 13 and its 20,000 lights were illuminated on Nov.
19 in a community event featuring complimentary entertainment and gifts.
Thousands attended the event, including families who have made the tree
lighting their yearly tradition to kick off the holiday season.
