In the wake of Apple’s exciting launch event for its new product line, the tech company has found itself in hot water for allegedly ripping of a band’s creative vision for a music video.

Indie-pop band OK Go claims that Apple stole its idea for a music video and utilized it for marketing purposes.

OK Go rose to popularity not just because of its catchy songs, but also because of its creative music videos that consistently go viral—you may remember the band for its wildly popular choreographed treadmill dance in their video for “Here It Goes Again”. Apparently, the band’s unique idea for their recent music video also piqued the interest of Apple.

OK Go’s manager, Andy Gershon, told Bloomberg Business Week that the band met with Apple in April to pitch a concept for a potential video collaboration. When Apple turned the idea down, OK Go decided to use the concept in its own video.

In OK Go’s video for their song, “The Writing’s on the Wall”, the camera pans around the room in a single shot, relying on morphing visual effects to make the band members appear to be doing something they are not.

Coincidentally, Apple used the same visual trick in the video that kicked off their product launch event on Tuesday. Apple hired 1stAveMachine, the very same production company behind OK Go’s video, to create an opening film for the launch event of the iPhone 6 phones, Apple Pay, and the Apple Watch.

Not only did Apple use the same production company for its “Perspective” video, but it also used the same director. The “Perspective” video was strikingly similar to OK Go’s video, and while some may think that Apple was simply inspired by OK Go’s creative concept, the fact that OK Go pitched Apple the same idea earlier this year and was rejected has the band exploring its legal options.

OK Go’s music video has scored over 10 million views on YouTube since it was uploaded in June, and it even earned the band a Video Music Award for best visual effects.

Gershon said, “The videos speak for themselves, and you can draw your own conclusions.”
