Altamira Supports Advancement of Women in Technology at Technica All-Women Hackathon

COLLEGE PARK, Md.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Altamira Technologies sponsored this year’s Technica hackathon event at
the University of Maryland. As the nation’s largest all-women
hackathon, Technica supports gender diversification within STEM fields
and works to strengthen connections between students and the tech
industry. The event brought together over 1,000 students—from elementary
school through college—along with a range of sponsors and mentors who
supported the participants throughout the 24 hours across multiple
technical challenges.

During the event women of all skill levels formed teams to develop and
advance innovative hacks. Themes of machine learning emerged across a
range of projects as participants explored solutions for home-buyers,
entrepreneurs, security professionals and more. At the conclusion of the
24-hour hacking session, innovations were considered for a range of
prizes, including Best Cybersecurity Hack, Best Hack for Social Good,
and Best Financial Hack.

Altamira judged submissions for the Best Hardware Hack and presented the
prize to the MyGraphs project, a virtual reality teaching
aid. MyGraph uses virtual reality as a hands-on learning tool to help
students visualize 3D graph equations. While designed to support the
instruction of calculus, the developer foresees using the
technology to teach chemistry and biology in the future.

“The projects presented at this year’s
hackathon demonstrate impressive forward thinking around
implementation, with many participants designing new ideas for
human-machine interfaces,” said Jonathan Moneymaker, EVP & Chief
Strategy Officer for Altamira. “Technica directly aligns with Altamira’s
core initiative to accelerate the development of women in technology
careers, and we look forward to continuing our support in 2018.”
