Joan Manuel Serrat is Latin societies ‘Person of the Year’

The Latin Recording Academy has revealed who their “Person of the Year” honor goes to at the upcoming 15th annual Latin Grammy awards show. And yet again, it goes to a renowned artist from Spain.

Spanish singer Joan Manuel Serrat has been chosen as The Latin Recording Academy’s “Person of the Year.”

The award honors the winner for both their artistic and social accomplishments within the Latin society. Spanish pop star Miguel Bose took the same title in 2013.

“Joan Manuel has become a true symbol for freedom, coherence, quality, and perfect use of our language, and a reference that we all have in reaching our goals,” said Shakira, a previous winner of the award.

The singer-songwriter landed his first record contract in 1965, when he was a still a teenager.

Although he is known for his music, much of his career was shaped through his political views. For five years he was banned from Spanish media for going against dictator Francisco Franco.

A special concert for “Person of the Year”

A special concert will take place for the winner on November 19 in Las Vegas, a day before The Latin Grammy Awards take place in the same city.

The concert will feature friends of Serrat along with known musicians that will take on the task of performing the Spaniard’s famous songs from throughout his career.
