The Hispanic Federation, The Latino Alzheimer’s & Memory Disorders Alliance (LAMDA), The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and The National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) have joined forces this month and created LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s. What’s more, Latinos have higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease and other degenerative brain conditions when compared to non-Hispanic whites, but Latinos are less likely to ever receive a diagnosis. “I see the destructive impact of Alzheimer’s on Latino families everyday and we can not afford to ignore this growing public health threat,” said Constantina Mizis, CEO of the Latino Alzheimer’s & Memory Disorders Alliance. “We look forward to ramping up our work against this disease in partnership with the LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s coalition.” LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s will address Alzheimer’s in the Latino community by working toward the following goals: Increase public and private-sector resources committed to stopping Alzheimer’s disease. Accelerate the drug development process to deliver therapies to all those in need. Bring dramatic improvements to the standards and systems of care for people living with Alzheimer’s and those who care for them. The new coalition is part of the larger group, USAgainstAlzheimer’s, an organization that has already made a huge impact within the Alzheimer community. USAgainstAlzheimer’s has already secured more than $200 million dollars in additional Alzheimer research funding through the next few years and has created a network of 115 million people working toward Alzheimer’s disease research. LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s is the next step in the war against degenerative brain disease.
