Over the years Latin women had the chance to play a role on popular TV. But does that mean they have been represented correctly?
Characters like “Modern Family”‘s Gloria played by Sofia Vergara or “Devious Maids” character Carmen played by Roselyn Sanchez represent Latinas as very loud or as maids.

‘Cristela’ breaks the norm
“Cristela,”on the other hand, is about a regular, not oversexualized or portrayed as a lower-class Latina character who portrays the lead of the cast.

She is a normal citizen who, like many Latinas, comes from a Latin background.
In this case, Cristela played by Cristela Alonzo, is a Mexican-American girl who after six years of law school is about to land an unpaid internship at one of the country’s most prestigious law firms.
But she faces the difficulty of gaining the acceptance of her working-class family who are accustomed to old culture and have yet to accommodate to her modern, professional career.
Alonzo is also a stand-up comic. She has made appearances on late night shows such as “Late late show With Craig Ferguson” and “Conan.”
Carlos Ponce also joins the cast playing the role of Felix. The rest of the cast is made up of Terri Hoyos, Andrew Leeds, and Sam McMurray.
The situational comedy was written by Cristela Alonzo and Kevin Hench and according to their Facebook page, “Cristela” will air on ABC on October 10.
