Since the abdication of King Juan Carlos, announced on June 2,  rumors of an impending separation from Queen Sofia have swirling. The distance between Juan Carlos and Sofia was palpable, but no one thought they would get a divorce. The King and Queen have led separate lives for several years and only appeared together at official events. The last time we would see them together was at the official coronation of his son as King of Spain.

Juan Carlos’s abdication and the proclamation of his son Philip VI as the new King of Spain has opened the door to the possibility that Juan Carlos and Sofia will put in writing what was already in place: a physical separation that has been more than evident.

Tuesday, Italian daily “La Repubblica” published in its printed edition-just a few paragraphs in an interior page that an official statement from the Royal Household Press Office announcing the “effective divorce” of the Spanish monarchs s is inmminent.

The Queen has spent most of her vacation in Mallorca, where she typically has vacationed with her husband. This year Juan Carlos has not stepped into the Marivent Palace, the summer residence of the Spanish royal family where the now King Felipe VI and his wife Letizia have gone with their two daughters to spend time with grandma Sofia.

Juan Carlos has only been seen in public twice this summer: at the inauguration of Juan Manuel Santos as president of Colombia and in Granada a week ago where he supported the Spanish basketball team.

Queen Sofia has stayed away from all the problems that the family has suffered in recent years with her usual discretion. She is the sole figure of the royal family who has not been tainted by financial scandals as has her daughter Princess Cristina and her husband Inaki Urdangarin himself or the former King of Spain Juan Carlos and the scandalous relationship with his “close friend” Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein.
