FIFA dropped the hammer on Luis Suarez on Thursday. The Uruguayan striker was suspended for nine international matches and for four months from all type of soccer activities, including playing for his club, Liverpool.

Suarez and the Uruguayan FA can appeal, however, the player is officially done for the World Cup.

The suspension is a big blow to Uruguay’s chances in the World Cup, they will be missing their best player for their second round matchup against Colombia.

As it was to be expected reactions from all around the world came pouring in when the verdict was handed down.

Uruguayan President Jose Mujica came to the striker’s defense.

According to the press in Uruguay the president stated, “I did not see him bite anyone. But they give each other so many kicks and blows and normally they put up with it.”

He also went on to call Suarez “an excellent player.”

Former Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler told Talksport, “You can’t defend him. Off the pitch he’s an absolutely lovely fella. He does so much work for charity, does so much work in the community in Liverpool. And I love him as a player, but you cannot condone what he has done.”

Fan reactions in England

English publication the “Daily Mirror” posted some fan reactions to the suspension.

“We all understand that he’s a fierce and fiery person, but he has got to control that side of him and he has shown that he can do that. But he has let himself down, the fans and also the club.”
